What is CBD?
Definition
ADiscovered about 80 years ago, Cannabinoid (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid being one of the 113 cannabinoids found in the plant of cannabis with the popular content responsible for “highness” known as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This substance THC is responsible for about 40% of extract from the cannabis plant. According to clinical research as of three years ago, which included studies connected to certain issues such as anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain, a piece of convincing evidence shows cannabidiol can suppress these conditions.
Origin
How is cannabidiol different from marijuana, cannabis, and hemp?
There is a wrong notion that hemp and marijuana are not the same plant species. However, they are tall and are varying cannabis names, a kind of flowering plant in the Cannabaceae family. Although science does not say both “hemp and “marijuana” are different, however, the law says they are different. On legal grounds, the main thing that differentiates both is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is a chemical found in the cannabis plant which makes people go “high” when they take cannabis.
Marijuana
Most times when people say “marijuana,” they mean cannabis that can lead to “highness.” “Weed” is also another term they use to replace “marijuana.” There are also other terms people use to refer to marijuana.
Cannabis
Any products gotten from Cannabis sativa are referred to as “cannabis.”
Hemp
Hemp is a term used for the description of cannabis containing 0.3% or less content of THC by dry weight.
CBD vs CBG
Hemp has two common chemical substances which are CBD and CBG. These compounds are a member of a cannabinoid group, giving cannabis both medical and recreational properties. Naturally, the human body produces cannabinoids. They help the body in the regulation of feelings, appetite, thinking, and pain sensation. THC and CBD are the two primary cannabinoids. Hemp contains a massive amount of CBD which is less psychoactive, that is, users cannot experience any form of “highness.” Interestingly, researchers have different medical applications for this substance and have no side effects on consumers. On the other hand, CBG is only present during the stage of blooming in the hemp plant. However, the properties can be applied therapeutically. The bad side is that finding reliable CBG-rich products can come with difficulties since it has a short booming period. Thankfully, Green Flower Botanicals experts are teaching struggling growers of high-quality CBG products a way to successfully grow these content massively. It is, however, pertinent to know that different cannabinoids can be found in hemps such as THCV, CBN, CBC, and others. All these compounds have potential therapeutic usefulness. To that end, this article largely concentrates only on THC and CBD since they are the most studied in the aspect of health.

CBD Legal in the USA: Is CBD FDA-Approved?
In the United States, not many cannabis-based drug products have the approval of the FDA.
- Epidiolex. Epidex, oral CBD solution11 was the earliest to contain purified substance gotten from cannabis with approval from the FDA12. The approval of Epidolex was aimed at treating rare and severe seizures in epilepsy form, Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex for age two upward patients. This drug has also proved to lower the rates of other seizures, however, the FDA is yet to approve this seizures-use.
- Marinol and Syndros. Dronabinol is present in Marinol and Syndros, a THC13 synthetic form. Both drugs are readily available in capsules or oral solutions. Dronabinol’s effectiveness is observed in the brain part responsible for appetite vomiting, and nausea control, hence, there is a wide range of therapeutic applications of these drugs. They are applied in treating nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients. Additionally, they are great at treating patients suffering from weight loss due to HIV.
- Cesamet. This drug has nabilone, a THC-like chemically structured synthetic compound. Cesamet also affects the brain part controlling vomiting and nausea15. The prescription of these drugs is for chemotherapy-receiving patients who are yet to respond to other nausea and vomiting treatments. However, there has been no approval yet for any other CBD drug products as they are yet to confirm their safety and effectiveness when it comes to treating these particular illnesses.
Is CBD a Drug?
People in the US can sell hemp and its products legally, thanks to the 2018 law passed. However, this doesn’t mean all hemp products are legalized. People can put CBD into foods or dietary supplements since it is legalized. Cosmetic products can only contain CBD. The CBD amount in these products varies from what their label carries.
What Does CBD Do?
The advertisement of CBD is good for providing relief for anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Other advertisements focus on sleep enhancement. Another major part of its popularity is its “nonpsychoactive feature. Additionally, more health benefit lies in the plant for users without experiencing “highness” (or the midnight pizza munchies).

Anxiety Relief
Although anxiety itself is not a sleep disorder, however, it can lead to low sleep quality, insomnia, and apnea. Cannabidiol can calm the nervous system as seen from early research that showed that it can help in anxiety treatment and other disorders connected to it. A study showed that about 80% of people who took part in CBD use for anxiety treatment said there was a drastic fall in the level of anxiety within 30 days. About 65% of participants reported improvement in their sleep as other results were not stable.
Sleep Promotion
Over the last ten years, researchers have been motivated to look deep into the effects of marijuana and CBD benefits especially due to the rise in the public interest.
Cortisol levels are the stress hormone, especially at dawn, however, those suffering from insomnia may have high cortisol levels during nighttime. Waking up at night includes insomnia independence and having high cortisol levels during nighttime.
According to a study on CBD effects, researchers reported a reasonable amount of decrease in cortisol levels when CBD oil was administered. This, however, shows that cortisol release can be influenced by CBD, which may likely act as a sedative. Further research led to the recruitment of 103 participants on CBD and sleep for those suffering from anxiety or low-quality sleep. The effects of CBD combined were studied by the researchers alongside other medications prescribed. The Cannabidiol dosages ranged from 25 to 175 mg. According to the researchers, they found that there was a need for higher dosages for anxiety and troubled sleep. Each participant was closely monitored by the investigators during the 3-month study. The first follow-up showed that about 66.7% said they have improved in their sleep, with 25% reporting their sleep worsened. The second follow-up saw 56.1% had better sleep but was a different story for the remaining 26.8%. The conclusion by the researchers was that CBD may provide short-term sleep, however, sustaining the effects may not be easy.
Pain Relieve
From time immemorial, even 2900 BC, people have suppressed different pain using CBD. More recently, scientists have found that some cannabis components such as CBD are the brain behind cannabis’s pain-relieving effects. The endocannabinoid system is one of the human body systems, being a special system, that helps to regulate different functions such as sleep, appetite, pain sensation, as well response from the immune system.
The body produces endocannabinoids known as neurotransmitters, binding to cannabinoid receptors in the human nervous system. According to studies, CBD may help suppress chronic pain. This is possible by when it affects the receptor activity of the endocannabinoid, reducing inflammation, as well as initiating an interaction with neurotransmitters.
Certain research showed that certain pain may cure with the use of Cannabidiol, such as nerve pain and back pain, when used on its own. For more effectiveness, it may require a THC combination. Many human studies showed that using Cannabidiol alongside THC is effective in multiple sclerosis (MS) and arthritis pain-related treatment.
Sativex, (nabixmols) an oral spray with a 1:1 THC and CBD combination already has approval in different countir6for MS pain-related treatment. A study on 47 persons with multiple sclerosis examined the effects of the oral spray Sativex use for 30 days. Many of them reported better pain improvement, ability to walk, and muscle spasms improvement. However, there was no study group included in the study, therefore, ruling out the effects of placebo is impossible. A review from some researchers also pointed out that people living with ms-related neuropathic pain and chronic severe neuropathic pain can benefit from Sativex. The review stressed further that oral spray may help in anxiety relief, including tress, which primarily triggers chronic pain.
Moreover, other research suggested that this with rheumatic symptoms disease such as fibromyalgia may use CBD for relief. A study survey data inclusive of 2,701 people with rheumatic symptoms such as fibromyalgia showed that people who reduced their pain with CBD had a general report on symptoms improvement, even on a more significant level. Also, preclinical evidence showed from the study of rodents showed that CBD may help reduce painful effects and inflammation connected to arthritis, however, studies on humans do not show this. Although researchers are not giving up that CBD can be used for certain pain treatments, particularly when taken alongside THC. There is a need for more high-quality findings the determination how effective they will be to manage pain.
